Bhilai to Sirpur on bike: Chapter 12: Buddhist monastery, Sirpur: Part 1

After the Baleshwara Mahadeo group of temples we went to see the Buddhist monastery. Excavations have uncovered a Buddhist monastery, which suggests that Sirpur was an important Buddhist center.The Archeological Survey of India (ASI) has discovered a Buddha statue dating back to the 6th century along with other sculptures. The Buddha statue, which is in the Padmasana position, is made of basalt stone and is 1.1 metre in height and 1 metre in width. The discoveries have been mentioned in the writings of the Chinese traveller Huen Tsang, who had visited Sirpur in the 7th century. The writings also reveal that there is a Bodh Stupa made by King Ashoka, 100 Bodh Vihars and 150 temples in Sirpur. Here are the photos of the Buddhist monastery:
