Bangalore to Shravanabelagola on bike: Chapter 3: Chandragiri: Part 4: Bharata

  • Bharata: The image to the north of Shantinatha Basti, which is standing within an iron railing, is that of Bharata, brother of Bahubali. The Digambara traditions in this place accepted and popularised Bharata image from the 10th century. Another image of Bharata is found at the Akhanda Bagilu on the large hill. From an inscription nearby the Bharata image on the small hill, it is said that the artist Arishtanemi carved this image. This image is not hewn out of the rock bed, it is mutilated below the thighs. Stylistically it is very close to the Bahubali image on the large hill and is assignable to the Ganga period (10th century).
