Madiwala lake or BTM lake Bangalore: Part 1

Madiwala lake is one of the biggest lakes in Bangalore spread over an area of 114.3 hectare. It is situated in the BTM Layout. It is a home to many migratory birds. The Madiwala Lake comes under the administration of Karnataka State Forest Department which carries out the routine maintenance of this lake. There is also a beautiful Children park. The boating facility has been discontinued recently. The Madiwala lake sees a huge number of Spot-billed Pelican migration in the winter(November-December). These Spot-billed Pelicans live in groups. The main food is fish. Pelicans take small flight across the lake for fishing. These migratory birds can also be sighted in Sri Lanka. They provide a great sight while landing. Typically their wing spans for about 8.5 feet. The pelicans in this lake share their food with the local fishermen. Egrets can also be sighted along with these birds.
As the city’s growth spiraled, the Madivala Lake was subjected to intense pollution, with the blockage of inflow channels, encroachments into the catchment area and inflow of sewage water. All these had transformed the lake into a very large sewage pool. Madivala Lake, which was once, a fresh water tank, was fully covered with thick growth water hyacinth, thus preventing aeration and affecting the bio-diversity of flora and fauna. Presently the lake is restored under INEP and is in good condition.

Hi.. I wish to alert the authorities to kindly clear the weeds that are growing in the madiwala lake. It has covered 85% of the lake now. I pass by this lake every morning and see the sad state of this beautiful lake. It used to be a magnificant sight with migratory birds( Spot billed pelican) which visit the place each year.It is now getting ruined to due the weeds which are covering the lake at such high speed.

Authorities… kindly visit the location and act quickly before we lose this lake for good.

Hi Sneha, thanks for your comments. That’s a nice point you put up. It’s good to see people who are keen on protecting nature. However, I am not at all related in any way to the management of the lake. I guess, you have to contact Bangalore Municipal Corporation for clearing up the weed. Also, I will make a point myself to drop a letter to the municipality.

hi….i would like to see the madivala lake by its original way because now its been polluted alot i feel bad to see the lake in this condition so i request the authorities who see my coment to take an action…..it affects people alot who stay nearby , its my kind request……..THANK YOU
