Nandi Hills
Date of journey: 18/05/2008
Starting from: Bangalore
Destination: Nandi Hills
Crew: Maneesh, Lucky, Deepika and Sujeet.
We started in morning time at 4.30 am in our bikes. It was actually Sujeet’s idea to check out sunrise at Nandi hills. Nandi hills (Nandidurga) is situated 60 kms north of Bangalore. It was one of the summer retreats of Tipu Sultan. It is about 3940 ft above sea level and the highest peak being 1,478 m. The cool breeze was blowing in the morning and it was an amazing drive. You can take the following route to Nandi Hills: From Hebbal flyover take NH7 and then turn right to Devanahalli after about 30 km. From there go till BIAL airport and then take a left diversion at the entry of Chikballapur. Look out for mount view resorts board. Only when you turn left there is a board ten meters ahead, which says Nandi Hills 22 Km. It was a nice drive up hills and requires good deal of driving skills. We found many people changing gears while going up hills, well, I believe that’s not an ideal thing to do as if the gears stuck, it will be a problem. We reached there at about 6.30 am and it was a bit late. Actually, the best time to leave would be around 3 am if you want to see the sunrise. At the entrance we saw a small pond:

Then, we climbed the hill and saw a temple:

After that we climbed further and saw the spectacular view from the highest point. There was rapid cool breeze blowing and we sat there for some time and took some shots:

Then, we went to the temple. We found many ancient sculptures of the deities over there:

Then, we had some coffee and moved to the other side of the hills. There were many monkeys and one came quite close to me. The girls were panicking but it was great to see the monkeys from so close. Then, we saw a snake emerging but due to the sound of our footsteps it disappeared in the bushes. It was a decent size snake and looked poisonous. We moved ahead and I took some nice shots of the surrounding hills.

After that we went for the breakfast. There is a small restaurant where we had some Maggie and coffee. After the breakfast we took some chips and were roaming. Suddenly, a monkey arrived and snatched the chips packet from Lucky. She was terrified and was screaming, I told her to relax, as it’s not a good idea to take back the chips from the monkey
Then, it was time to go back as some time later it would be very hot because it was a dry season. While going downhill it was nice and easy drive. It took us three hours to return to my house as you can expect the traffic at daytime. Although, we were tired but still thought of cooking lunch at my place. It was a nice few hours trip and a good place to chill out in weekends.
