Diwali holidays were coming up and I called by brother from my hometown Bhilai for a couple of trips. We decided to explore beaches. My brother is a great traveller and he always has some good destinations in his list. But he told me to plan this time. I was having 2 holidays in one week i.e. saturday and sunday and 3 days in the next week. So for these 2 days we decided to go to Mangalore. I booked the bus tickets in Airavath. If you are travelling in season time, book tickets before one week or so as its quite a rush, however, luckily I got the tickets. So we three, me, my brother and my girlfriend, Lucky started our journey on Saturady morning around 8 am. Airavath is a cozy AC bus with all the facilities. They were playing some movie but I thought to have a nap. I got up at Madikeri and we took some lunch. After a couple of hours drive I thought we were near Mangalore but no it was not and we waited and waited till we reached Mangalore at about 5 pm in the evening. We took a nice hotel, it was cheap and good. I took a shower and till everyone was ready it was 7.30 pm so all the plans for going out to the beach was not looking good so we decided to check out the beach on the next day. The hotel was having Dinner service but I thought of having some local dishes like prawns, etc. outside. We found a nice restaurant near out hotel and I ordered prawns and fish. You can get some nice fish Bangada as it is called and I had 3 or 4 of them. Then, after finishing a nice dinner we went to sleep as we need to get up early in the morning. In the hotel room I found a Mangalore travel book and I thought we can follow the same the next day. Saturday was finished in travelling and we were having just one day of our holidays left. I got up at 5.30 in the morning and it was raining. I thought it will stop by the time we have breakfast. It did stop after the breakfast and we took an auto to check out our first spot Sultan Battery. Sultan Battery is in Boloor 6 km. from Mangalore on the bank of Gurpur river. It was an overcast day and the roads were all wet. From the travel book I found that Sultan Battery is a watch tower built in 1784 by Tipu Sultan to prevent warships to enter Gurpur river. Now the remaining part of the fort is called as Tipu’s Well. It looked like a small fort constructed in black stones:

We climbed at the top of the fort and found a great view of the Gurpur River. It was a wide river with alot of trees on the banks on the other side. Due to the cloudy weather the view was more beautiful:
On the other side of the river there were some fishing vessels getting ready:

We arrived at about 8 am so there was no rush and the atmosphere was very calm and quiet. We spent some nice time over there and decided to go to the next spot Kadri park. Kadri park is a children’s park located few kms. from Sultan Battery. It looked like a normal park and I took some shots:

Then, we decided to go to the place for which we came Mangalore, the Panambur Beach. The beach is about 10 kms from the city and you can take an auto or a bus to that place. I preferred the bus as it was quite cheap. We got down at the bus stop which was near to the beach. We stared walking towards the beach but could not locate it even after a 10 minutes walk. The whole area was deserted and it didn’t looked like the place near to the beach. You can find the red mud and the industrial waste all around the place. Then, I found in my travel book that the beach is near to the harbor. After walking for about 15-20 minutes we finally reached near the beach. It was a great view and I found myself energized. We sat there for some time and moved for the lunch in a smalll restaurant nearby. Again I had some fish fry bangada and it was very tasty. After the lunch we again went to the beach:
My brother was relaxing on the beach and I and Lucky were collecting shells(shankh). After one hours hard work we found some nice shells. They were very beautiful. Panambur beach is quite nice and you go in the water unlike some of the beaches which are quite dangerous. In Pondicherry you can find such kind of a beach near the beach road where you can’t go for swimming or bathing. I will write about Pondicherry in the next post. After having alot of fun we moved to the other side of the beach which was rocky:

It was 4 pm in the evening and we had to catch a bus for bangalore at 9.30 pm so we decided to go back to the hotel. The 2 days were over in a flash and we thought we required one more day to check out the nearby places in Mangalore. We were very tired and slept in the bus and reached bangalore at around 7 am in the morning. It was a nice trip and we were looking forward for the next trip which was Pondicherry.
