Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary is on the way from Mysore to Sultan Bathery. It is spread over 344 square kms. and is about 16 km east of Sultan Bathery, the nearest large town. Established in 1973, the Wayanad wild life sanctuary is contiguous to the protected area network of Nagarhole and Bandipur of Karnataka on the north-east and Mudumalai of TamilNadu on south-east. The sanctuary is part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. Wild animals such as Elephant, tiger, panther, jungle cat, civet cat, monkeys, wild dog, bison, deer, bear, etc. inhabit the sanctuary. Reptiles like monitor lizard and a variety of snakes are seen. Peacock, babblers, cuckoos, owl, woodpecker and jungle fowl are only a few among the different types of birds seen in the area. Just near the entrance I saw a couple of monkeys:

I also took a video:

I went to their office to take the tickets. The entry fee for adult is Rs. 10 and for child is Rs. 5. Camera charge for a still camera is Rs. 50. Also, the person over there said that we need to take a guide and for that the charges will be Rs. 100. I asked if we could take our vehicle and as we were having Indica, he said that we need to take a Jeep for which we have to pay Rs. 250. After paying all that we were ready for the adventure. As it was a rainy season I wasn’t expecting much. The best time to visit a wildlife sanctuary is summer season. In that time you even have the chance to spot the majestic tiger or the illusive leopard. After visiting many sanctuaries and national parks I still haven’t spotted these two animals in the wild. There was a gate to enter the sanctuary and a nice quotation was written just below an elephant photograph:

I am mighty but humble and kind. Please be caring and kind to me or else beware of my fury.

Just after entering we saw an elephant. I asked if its wild and our guide said that it was a pet elephant:

It is always a great adventure to go for a safari and I love it. The whole atmosphere changes dramatically as you never know what you will see next. Check out this video:

That’s a watchtower inside the jungle:

After driving for some time the Jeep driver stopped and the guide told us that from here we could see the Karnataka-Kerala border. In this picture till that bridge it is Kerala and after that bridge its Karnataka. Then, the driver took us to the other side of the forest. Here, we spotted some langurs but I wasn’t able to take a snap as they moved quickly. But soon after we saw some spotted deers and I got my shot:

After a nice safari we came out of the forest. As mentioned in my earlier posts, Wayanad is quite a good place for nature photography, and again I found a nice landscape:

We came back to the place from where we started and the driver said that there is a nice museum close by. Just near the museum I saw a nice resting place:
