Then, we had a nice vegetarian lunch at a nearby restaurant. It was 4 pm and we wanted to check out the last place on the route, the Pechiparai Dam. We took a bus and reached over there at 5 pm. About 45 km. from Nagercoil this dam has been constructed. This dam in Kalkulam Taluk, was built during the days of the Maharaja Sri Moolam Thirunal across the river Kodayar. The construction of the dam was designed on the pattern of the Periyar dam in the Madurai district. The length of the dam is 425.1 mts. It has a catchment area of 204.8 sq.km. The reservoir is surrounded by dense forests, which are famous for their valuable trees, and rich wild life such as tiger, elephants, deer etc. A hill tribe, small in number known as ‘Kanikars’ dwell in the dense forests around the lake. The water from the reservoir is used for both irrigation of crops and for drinking purposes. It was getting dark and we rushed to see the dam. From the bus stop we walked for about 2 kms. and reached the dam. The dam is surrounded by hills of the Western Ghats, and is a scenic place.

At the dam site there was a big board and “Protected Area” was written on it. Also, photography was not allowed inside. After coming back I took a snap from outside:

Just near the entrance there was a continuous flow of water:

It was 5.45 pm and we returned to the bus stop and there were no buses. I asked a nearby hopkeeper and he said that there won’t be any buses at this time for Kanyakumari and he suggested us to go to Marthandam. After some time we got into a bus for Marthandam. From Marthandam we took another bus to Kanyakumari. Finally we reached Kanyakumari at 9 pm and straight away moved to a restaurant for dinner. We ordered a vegetarian thali for dinner. After dinner we returned to the lodge and I had a nice shower. I checked my list and we thought of going Sothavilai Beach, the next day.
