Trip to Varanasi aka Banaras aka Kashi: Chapter 3: Ramnagar fort
Then, we got into the auto and went to see the Ramnagar fort. The Ramnagar fort lies about 14 km. from Varanasi and is situated on the opposite bank of river Ganga. There was a board over there which read:
On the eastern banks of the Ganga and south east of Kashi the present fort was built in 1752 by Raja Balawant Singh who shifted his headquarters from Gangapur. The “Lal Darwaza” is the gateway to the fort. There is a big museum inside the fort. The royal museum has 5 sections. The first section has vehicles, palanquins, silver howdahs, the second section has dresses, musical instruments, chairs, the third section has the royal armory with swords and guns, the fourth section displays a special big clock, the royal bed, furniture, costumes, and momentos while the fifth section shows glimpses of the famous Ramlila of Ramnagar and Goswami Tulsidas’s Ramcharitmanas. Along with the museum there is a library having a rich collection of are books on different subjects including old handwritten manuscripts of Ramcharitmanas. A handwritten agreement letter of sant Goswami Tulsidas is also preserved. This is the only existing signed letter of the great saint poet. Near the fort compound on the edge of the river is “Vyaasheshvara” ( A Shiva Lingam installed by sage Veda Vyas). In the fort there is also an idol of the Lord Hanuman made of black stone which is available for darshan for the common people only once in a year. The world famous Ramlila of Ramnagar is performed every year during the month of Ashwin under the aegis of the fort. Photos of Ramnagar fort:
